A specialist in the structure of Spanish society, his work is greatly influenced by American sociology. Has published more than sixty books, several hundred monographic studies, and more than a thousand articles of various kinds. His 1995 volume La España de nuestros abuelos. Historia íntima de una época (The Spain of our Grandparents: The Intimate History of an Epoch) combines his sociological training with his interest in nineteenth-century and contemporary Spanish literature. A book which had a considerable impact at the time of its publication was Sociología del franquismo.
